Pedal Casings
Posted on February 14, 2008 - Categories Misc |

I’m a guitar nut.
When I’m not playing for Inverted Coma, I breathe the guitar, I sleep with my guitar, I mate with my guitar.
Now that I’ve gotten your attention,
When I purchased my Line 6 guitar pedal not so long ago, I was really shocked at the insane prices of the case that came with it.
So what did I do?
I got myself some wood, some accesories, my toolbox and made my own pedal casing. Then when I put up pictures of my work on Jamtank, an online forum, (which can be viewed here)
http://jamtank.net/community/index.php?topic=2588.0
I started getting orders for them. Quite a number actually.
So now, I’m kind of a part time carpenter, that’s when I’m not pushing drugs or playing the guitarlah.
Here’s a slideshow of my works thus far..
.

So it came to be that as more and more orders came in, there was a need to cater for the different specifications of fellow guitarists.
Or perhaps it was just their indirect way of telling me my product sucked and needed modifications.
Nonetheless my pedal casing evolved as such ….
BASIC
The very basic and first type that I came up with. Wrapped with black velvet and has the basic latches and handle, minimal frills and is also the cheapest
STANDARD - VELVET WRAP
People then started asking me to come up with a way to reinforce the corners of the casings to increase it’s road worthiness. So I recommended that they buy Gator cases. Nah, I’m just kidding.
I added metal corners to the cases, thus increasing the wear and also overall rock star vibe. Since the majority of people want this addition, I’d like to call it the standard.
STANDARD - PVC WRAP
Ahhhh ….. but of course there’s always room for improvement. Since velvet collects dust easily, I got requests from people to use a more versatile and well … less dirty material for the case.
And so I got my hands on some PVC leather-like material for the cases. So far it’s been pretty much favoured.
STANDARD - REMOVABLE HINGES
Of course it was a matter of time before people asked me if they could be totally rock star and remove the whole lid while jamming and gigging with the case. And also requests came for those amp-like handles for better grip. No issue there at all…..
CUSTOM - POD BEANS
Then there were also requests for custom made cases to fit POD bean pedals. Found a way to fix the bean in place yet at the same time made it easy to remove it for table top tweaking. Wires and cable can be neatly tucked under the bean
CUSTOM - PEDAL BOARD WITH VELCRO LINING
Then the motherload came. Requests for pedal boards with velcro lining and removable lids. Works exactly the way the other cases do except that for this, you get the freedom of choosing how you want to arrange your music making toys.

I’ve been doing this pedal casing thing for a year now. Such was the popularity of the custom pedal board with velcro lining that it grew to be the pedal board of choice when orders were placed.
And so with that in mind, I came up with a standard range for my casings.

And very creatively named it …. well …. my Standard Line Of Pedal Casings
Each Standard Pedal Casing comes with ……
The casing of course (duhh) to protect your pedals.
Base lined with heavy duty Velcro strips with sufficient velcro included to attach all your pedals and also other creepy things in your bedroom.

Removable Casing Cover lined with soft sponge (and covered in grey wrap) to hold your pedals in place and to absorb any damage that might be incurred when you’re having your rock star moments

Brass Corners to increase overall roadworthiness of the entire casing. Tight gripping Brass Latches hold the casing in place, preventing your pedals from falling onto your feet and subsequently steering me clear of any lawsuits. An Amp-like Handle provides you with a comfortable grip even with heavy loads.
My standard pedal casings come in 2 different dimensions

I’ve made it such that the Standard 32 is comfortably roomy enough to house a rather large array of pedals including a wah and volume controller.
-
The Standard 24 on the other hand is ideal if you have a modest amount of pedals or if you have a multi effects pedal such as a GT8 or a POD XT Live.
I’m also currently working on a prototype open pedalboard. These boards will consist of just a board lined with velcro with compartments that house your power supply and hide your wires. They’ll also cost much less. Once I’m done with my first prototype I’ll put pictures up.

So of course the million dollar question here now is … why call it custom made pedal casings when they’re now all standardized?
Well, since I’m making these pedal cases by hand, I guess I’m not lying when I say they’re custom made.
Seriously now, the fact is I’ve taken into account everything I’ve learnt for the past year and put it all into the Standard 32 and Standard 24. This is what I feel will cater to the majority of guitarists out there who’re in search of an affordable alternative to the professionally made pedal casings out there that cost a bomb.
Having said that though, if you find that you want a pedal casing customized to your exact specifications, do let me know and I’ll try my best to help you. Based on your needs I’ll do what I can to make it affordable.
Say you’re a rocker chick or a totally gay ass guitarist and you want your casing wrapped in bright pink. No problem. I’ll just have to explain to my supplier why the hell I’m buying pink PVC.
But really, being a guitarist myself, I understand fully how important it is to have a proper pedal setup at your disposal, to be able to plug in and play, then pack up quickly without having your singer and other band members wait for you outside dissing you.

So if you’re interested, do contact me so that we can arrange a COD. Let me know which type of casing you want (Standard 32 vs Standard 24) and I’ll get down to it. If you need it urgently, I can also arrange for a courier service to send it to your doorstep but charges apply.
Or if you find that the standards do not meet your needs, do let me know what exactly you’re lookin for and I’ll give you a quote for a custom made pedal casing
Of course if you just want to enquire, I’d be more than glad to answer any of your questions.
